CBD for Pet Health: a Guide for Parents in Need

What is CBD and the Endocannabinoid System?

Cannabidiol (or CBD) is a cannabinoid growing in popularity for helping treat many physical & mental ailments. It interacts with the endocannabinoid system (ECS), one of the body’s largest networks that controls most of our vital functions, organs, and bodily systems. The ECS maintains homeostasis: a state of inner physiological balance — AKA our healthiest state of being.

All vertebrae mammals have an ECS, which means CBD impacts our furry friends the same way it does us. Since they’re smaller & have more delicate systems, they usually don’t need as large of a dose. But like us, each pet’s ideal dosage differs and takes time to find. Always consult a trusted, licensed healthcare provider before consuming new herbs. If you notice a sudden change in your pet’s behavior or other abnormal symptoms, it’s best to first consult a veterinarian and rule out any underlying conditions.

How can CBD help my pet?

There are various reasons people choose to give their pets (& themselves!) CBD. Some of the most common are:

  • Anxiety
  • Arthritis and mobility issues
  • Inflammation
  • GI disorders
  • Cancer
  • Seizures and epilepsy
  • Pain
  • Insomnia
  • Skin conditions
  • Glaucoma
  • General well-being

How much should I give them?

Start by giving a dose twice daily for 2 weeks, observe your fur baby’s behavior, and adjust the dosage accordingly. Veterinarian Dr. Robert Silver suggests a starting dose of 1mg/10lb twice a day. There may be some trial and error finding the ideal amount. Some pets might need more or less than others. You can try a tincture directly in the mouth, mixed in with treats, or some hemp-infused snacks!

As with anything, consistency is key. CBD is most effective when paired with a balanced nutrition and lifestyle. That means different things for different pets. It’s important to take the time to find out what works best for yours.

Maybe set a time of day where you both take your CBD together! Sometimes providing them with high quality CBD, lots of love, and maybe that extra piece of turkey once in a while (sorry, my cat got ahold of the keyboard) can be the best remedy. They’re family after all!
